About
INTRODUCTION
2015 Modern is a community-created constructed format that includes sets from Eighth Edition to Magic Origins. This means that all cards printed between July 29, 2003, and July 17, 2015, that were once Standard legal are allowed in this format – except for the cards that were on the Modern banlist at the time of Magic Origins.
See the list of all legal sets.
MOTIVATION
Why 2015?
The year 2015 is often referred to as the golden era of Modern, and for good reason. The Pro Tours Born of the Gods and Fate Reforged attracted huge viewership numbers and showcased the diversity and depth of the format. With 2015 Modern, we want to give players the opportunity to experience one of the peaks of the Modern format again or anew.
Magic Origins was chosen as the end point because it marks the end of the Three-Block Paradigm and is considered the last true core set. This was the time before...
...the FIRE design philosophy,
...the Twin Ban,
...the Eldrazi Winter,
...the Straight-to-Modern sets,
...and the Universes Beyond sets.
RULES
How is it played?
2015 Modern is played with contemporary Magic: the Gathering in-game rules.
The format follows the ban list from the time of Magic Origins, which means it has its own unique 2015 Modern ban list. We plan to keep this ban list unchanged to preserve the integrity and nostalgia of the format.
Just like in Modern, 2015 Modern is played one-on-one. The deck construction rules are also the same as for Modern:
Deck Size: Your constructed deck must have at least sixty cards.
Sideboard: You can have a sideboard of up to fifteen cards.
Card Limits: You can include no more than four copies of any individual card in your combined deck and sideboard, except for basic lands.
While 2015 Modern shares many similarities with regular Modern, there's one key difference: no new cards will be added to the card pool — neither from new Standard sets nor from supplemental sets.
